Cognitive
brain functions and financial status, what's the connection?
A study conducted by medical personnel from
Switzerland[1]
has revealed that a person's financial status has an impact on the aging
process of their brain. A group of researchers analysed medical images of the
brain and compared them with the socioeconomic status of individuals, including
their family income.
The authors noted that the relationship between family
income and brain health is partly explained by changes in neurite density and
myelination, indicating that financial status can affect cognitive ability
through these physiological mechanisms. However, in wealthier families, higher
income helped to preserve cognitive function even with negative changes in the
brain.
